Specializes in business and marketing research, data synthesis and analysis, training in electronic information services and business research, and information resources assessment, and project/program development and coordination. BUSINESS/MARKETING RESEARCH

Conducted telecommunications company and industry research - markets, distribution channels, competitors, products, statistics -- for a number of companies. Projects included collecting information on two telemanagement companies for possible acquisitions (at least one acquired), finding information about a multinational telecommunications firm for a joint venture decision, putting together a background report on the telecommunications line-sharing industry, the social and economic impacts of wireless communications, forecast of the international fax market, and the Oregon telecommunications contractors market.

Conducted a number of competitive intelligence and market research projects about the computer and software industries. Projects included the market and competitors for application-specific software in the test and measurement industry, the market for Pentium Pro workstation compilers, the utilities software market, a desktop videoconferencing market overview, magnetic tape market and competitors, video game and video game accessories market, and background on an electronics systems firm, Did six projects for a California-based software firm, gathering information about competitors, possible trademark infringers, and potential executive staff.

Conducted six competitive intelligence projects -- gathered secondary data and documents and conducted phone interviews -- for a major construction engineering firm.

Research analyst doing competitive intelligence and current awareness for major transportation services company.

Other competitive intelligence and company background information projects were about a sportswear company, bicycle helmet manufacturers, a real estate development firm, millwork companies, breaded vegetables firms, camera company, legal publishing companies, virtual management consulting firms, and veterinary biotechnology companies.

Researched the markets and general business climate for licensed sports collectibles, commercial floats and buoys, commercial washroom equipment, rifle spotting scopes, level sensors, integrated marketing services, combination chairs/carts, and online database niche markets.

Researched and located buyers, suppliers, distributors, and/or manufacturers (US and international) of colored glass mugs, coconut husks, street lights, US toothbrush manufacturers, electronic training software, international ice rinks, food enzymes, and hair care products.

Gathered international trade and market information to assist Oregon companies to become competitive in the global marketplace and non-US companies trade in Oregon. Projects included: Japanese & Korean investments and joint ventures in the Russian Far East, review of the frozen pizza market in Japan to justify expansion into that market, sake market in Japan and US and the potential for locating a sake refinery in Oregon (refinery was located in Oregon), market and competition for fruit juice concentrates in Europe, importers of wood products machinery into Chile, information on direct marketing of gift packs in Japan, advertising options for penetrating the German home exercise market, construction software market in Europe, competitors and market for home-health devices in France, market for Oregon native greens in Europe, plywood imports from Russia, market for Sri Lanka herbs, and imports of chicken and lumber from Russia.

Have located or compiled mailing lists of credit card processing companies in the US Midwest, fast food outlets in the US Midwest, short selling fund managers, employment agencies in the Charlotte, North Caroline area, and secondary wood products businesses in Oregon and Washington.

Miscellaneous research projects have included composting fire hazards, college student cheating, side effects of trazadone, bizarre deaths, adult attention deficit disorders resources, housing resources for multiply disabled deaf adults, origin or occurrences in non-fiction literature of phrase "difficult people," significance of gift giving and receiving in intercultural commercial relations, how to grow various food enzymes, finding a case reference for fiberglass pipe liability, consumer attitudes towards check acceptance companies, information consultants specializing in the securities field, tour schedule for the Gipsy Kings, finding a high resolution photo of a telecommunications satellite, healthcare quality facts, Internet resources for Slovakia, grants for agriculture and water projects in Burkina Faso, patent search on biofiltration of waste gases, and pulp and paper air pollution for process vents and related patents.

Internet

Conducted website evaluation and optimization analysis for a department of a major electronics products company, focusing on market placement, search engine positioning and friendliness, accessibility, and usability issues.

Directed the development of the National Women Business Owners Corporation (NWBOC) website. Managed a geographically diverse team of developers; oversaw design, continuity, content & page development; wrote more than 100 web pages for the site.

Was marketing consultant, did content development and website design for initial roll-out of for Oregon ED-NET and COMPASS web sites.

Conducted in-depth internet research to develop content for a web development project for a major transportation services company.

Founding member and first vice-president of Internet Professionals Northwest. Chairperson of the Web Taskforce which developed the policies for the association website, and developed and posted first web pages for the website.

Evaluated and made recommendations about content and design for 7 corporate websites.

Conducted search engine and mailing list/newsgroup promotion for the websites of 8 companies.

Managed nine electronic discussion groups organizations and companies.

Library and Information Services

Developed & managed a library of electronic database resources in a university research institute. Assisted businesses, students, & state agencies with over 75 international trade market research projects. Compiled trade statistics. Taught students and business people how to do market research and use international trade resources.

Planned, developed & operated health insurance corporate library including collection development and information needs assessment. Conducted database research on medical, insurance, management, and computer-related issues Maintained a current awareness service.

Staffed reference desks at large metropolitan county public library, primarily business and general reference. Used online library catalog, print and microform collections, and electronic databases to answer reference and research questions from public. Often handled 15-25 questions per hour.

Project/Program Development, Coordination & Management

Planned, developed, and managed a corporate library for three and a half years. Interviewed managers and executives in the company to determine the kinds of information and services that were needed, and then implemented programs, policies, and procedures to meet those needs.

Developed and operated the Trade Information Services program, which involved working with staff, persons involved with Oregon economic development, and international business faculty to determine the types of research resources, training, and services that should be made available to Oregon businesses through the Institute.

Directed the development of the a national non-profit corporate website. This involved working with the President, Board, and various team leaders to determine the purpose and functional areas of the website. It also involved coordinating a geographically diverse team of developers, and directing their work; asking for and obtaining content from the various NWBOC teams and committees, and putting together a strategic plan for the continued development of the site.

As Web Taskforce leader for a trade association website, worked with a team of members to plan, develop, and implement the website. This involved delegating tasks to committees, making sure tasks got completed, and overseeing the development of web development policies and procedures.

Writing, Speaking, Teaching & Training

Has written more than 90 published articles and papers, and has made presentations and taught at more than 22 local, national, and international meetings, seminars, and conferences. A few are presented below. (See chronological resume for complete list.

Conducted 3 seminars for the National Seminars Group on "How to Conduct Research on the Internet."

Wrote Speakers Guides for "How to Conduct Research on the Internet" and "Publishing on the Internet" tracks for the National Seminars Internet & World Wide Web Conference.

Conducted 12 one-on-one or small group customized trainings on how to use the Internet.

Was invited and taught seminars on "International Trade Resources on the Internet," and "Using the Internet for Business Development" at Spring Internet World '94 in San Jose, CA, and Internet World & Document Delivery World International 1994, in London, England.

Co-wrote "Using Databases for Competitive Intelligence and Cost-Effective Market Research," with James D. Thayer, published in the Journal of European Business.

Researched and wrote 8 articles for Database and Online magazines: "Using OneSearch for Everyday Searching," "Dialog Comments on Imaging Capabilities: An Interview with Fred Zappert," "Trade Information Services Online," "International Trade Information: Other Business Databases Online," "DIALOG's Enhanced Dialindex," "PIERS on DIALOG: Port Level Trade Data," "World Trade Markets' Trade/SEARCH International Traders' Directory Plus," and "Book Review: Creative Planning of Special Library Facilities."

Developed curriculum and taught "Business Uses of the Internet," for the Professional Development Center, School of Business Administration, Portland State University.

Developed curriculum and taught "Communicating with the World Through Networks", "International Trade Resources", "Practical Business Applications of the Internet", and "International Trade Resources on the Internet" for the Library & Information Management Program, Marylhurst College.

Made presentations, which were published in the conference proceedings, at the 1989-1993 National Online Meetings. The topics were "Trade Data: Not What It's Cracked Up to Be," "International Business Assistance Online," "Accessing the Global Village through Local Bulletin Board Systems," "Training end-users to make informed choices when doing electronically based research: Considerations in choosing and searching electronic databases," and "Using the Internet (and other CMCs) for Practical Business Research and Development."

Researched and wrote more than 60 "Business of the Month" articles for The Neighbor newspaper.
